Filtering materials have different tasks: filtering water floating particles (mechanical filtration), offering decomposing bacteria a place to settle (biological filtration) or removing harmful substances from water (chemical/absorbent filtering materials). Over time, of course, mechanical filtering materials are transformed into biological materials.

It always filters from the big to the end. The fine material placed at the beginning of the filter would get too fast. For the first level of filtration is ideal a large filter sponge or filter ceramic (JBL Cermec). For biological filtration JBL Sintomec and JBL Micromec offer the largest surface to decomposing bacteria. To extract colors and residues of drugs is used activated carbon (JBL Carbomec activ/Carbomec ultra). To filter nitrates you have available JBL NitratEx and JBL BioNitrat Ex. Against phosphate, which promotes the growth of algae, serves JBL PhosEx Ultra and against silicon acid (diatomee) JBL Silicat Ex.

Nitrates (NO3) and phosphates (PO4) form a nutritional basis for unwanted algae. First measure the content of phosphate with the JBL PROAQUATEST PO4 and, in case of increased values (from about 0.3 mg/l in fresh water aquarium), use special filter material JBL PhosEx Ultra.

Phosphates come from the death of algae and other plants, from the oversupply of fishes or from unsuitable food. Already from this information you can reduce the amount of phosphate in the water.
