How to have a nice aquarium without the annoying algae

The diatoms form a brownish patina on the plants, on the bottom and on the decoration in the aquarium. They form it when water contains more than 0.4 mg/l of silicic acid (SiO2). Usually silicic acid comes through tap water. This acid serves diatoms for the formation of their skeleton. To fight them it is enough to remove silicic acid to the water: diatoms die or even cannot be formed.

Diatomee are not poisonous or harmful. In the Tanganyika and Malawi lakes, they are even part of the nutritional base for the Aufwuchs feeding cycles. The algae, however, can form brown pawns that do not seem beautiful and that we want to eliminate.

Difference in diatoms/algae patinose
The two algae groups can look a lot like each other. But when you take them between your fingers you feel the difference: patinous algae seem visicide-patinose, while diatoms are rough.

Special filtering
SilikatEx removes silicates from freshwater and marine aquariums, depriving the unwanted diatoms (brown plates), which often appear after the addition of fresh water, their food resources. SilikatEx also removes phosphates, thus controlling the growth of other algae. The filtering material creates life conditions as in a biotope.
