For a beautiful aquarium without algae

The process of decomposition or mineralization of all the organic matter present in the aquarium (residues of food and plants, excrements of fish) takes place through the protein-ammonium-nitrite-nitrate stages. With a well-functioning biological filtering system, no ammonium or nitrite should be detected; nitrate content should increase slowly. Nitrate is the final stage of mineralization in the aquarium and, in relatively high concentrations, is not toxic to fish. Nitrate can be used as nutrients for plants; however, if the amount of nitrate in the aquarium is too high, it has a negative effect on plant growth and can have a negative impact on the well-being of the most sensitive fish. Values greater than 50 mg/l can also promote unwanted growth of algae. You should therefore strive to maintain values below 50 mg/l. With JBL Nitrate Test Set NO3 can measure nitrate values in your aquarium with ease.

Easy to use

Nitrates and phosphates are the main nutrients of algae. If you deprive the water of one or both substances, the algae can no longer grow.

However, bacteria decompose nitrate only under certain conditions. Only when there is no oxygen and there is a carbon source (nutrition for bacteria), the bacteria decompose nitrate to obtain its oxygen.

With JBL BioNitratEx, bacteria settle on the surface of the balls within 4 weeks and form a thick biofilm. A low oxygen zone is created under the biofilm, in which bacteria passes to the " nitrate breathing" and lowers the nitrate that promotes algae proliferation (NO3). Biological balls act as a feed for bacteria, while nitrate as a source of oxygen. Therefore, over time the biospheres decrease in size until completely disappear. This lasts about 6-12 months, depending on the content of nitrates. Once the balls are gone, you have to add new ones.

Woodworking

If many snails rise on the balls of JBL BioNitratEx, eat biofilm on their surface. As a result, oxygen will reach the lower layers of bacteria, which will no longer need to decompose nitrate to obtain oxygen. If in your aquarium there are many snails, it can be useful to pour the balls of JBL BioNitratEx in a fine lattice that prevents the entry of snails.

Difference compared to JBL NitratEx: JBL BioNitratEx works purely biologically through the decomposition of bacterial nitrates. JBL NitratEx, on the other hand, is made of a synthetic resin that binds water nitrate (only fresh water!) and exchanges it with harmless chloride (ionic exchange function). The advantage of this system is that it can be used quickly, e.g. to eliminate nitrates from the current or spring water.

However, it is recommended not to reduce too much nitrate content. If you drop below mg/l, there is a risk of formation of toxic sulfide in the aquarium.

JBL NitratEx cannot be used in marine aquariums. It can however be used to remove nitrates from tap water before water change.

Content: 100 balls for nitrate reduction, for 200-300 liters of water
