A successful coral reef aquarium depends on how well to maintain water parameters that are the key to a stable coral environment. All elements in natural marine water play a role in providing optimal water parameters, but some are more important than others. These elements, the foundation of the environmental reef, include the three main elements: calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and carbonates (CO3). All three have an important effect on water chemistry (pH stability, Alcalinity, Ionian force) and on many biological processes of coral (skeleton formation, ion exchange, photosynthesis).
