LAnubias Afzelii is a strong marsh plant from North West Africa, more precisely from Senegal to Zaire passing through Guinea, Congo, Sierra Leone and Mali.
THEAnubias Afzelii is a species belonging to the genus Anubias Aroid or those Anubias that during the flowering period generate heat. It has rough and thick leaves, of oblong shape – lanceolate or oblong – elliptical, coriaceous leaves, the dimensions vary from 13 cm to 35 cm in length and from 3 cm to 13 cm in width, the tip of the leaves is sharp as well as the base , the stem of the leaves comes to measure about 20 cm, while the entire plant reaches 55 cm in height and 15 cm wide (the meter version).
The large vertical leaves of bright green color make it pretty, graceful, to be inserted in any aquarium but it is above all a plant to test the turbulent cyclics and Discus, being very robust and with a taste not pleasant if ingested, also excellent for nursery since ideal during the deposition of eggs. The creeping rhizome in nature reaches the length meter and about 5 cm in diameter, in the aquarium instead it comes to measure from 5 cm to 7 cm, the important thing is not to subterrarlo, otherwise rots.
The growth without lighting is slow, while in full light grows faster, it does not need CO2 but good rule is iron-based fertilizer and traces of potassium, however it is a longeva plant, almost indestructible, wonderfully versatile.
The inflorescence is formed by a spade of about 5-10 cm that emerges from the spata that is relatively small, this particular distinguishes it from the other Anubias which have the smallest (flower) spade.
The upper part of the plant is covered with male flowers while the lower part of the spadice is covered with female flowers that are reduced to the ovary and the stigma. The ideal location varies from central to bottom tub, depending on the size of the plant.
