NYMPHOIDES AQUATIC - Banana plant

Genzianacee family.

Provenience American Atlantic Coast, especially Florida.

Description Adult leaves from orbiculars to reniforms having a diameter of 8-10 cm; submerged leaves of light green colour finely reticulated with carmine. Intense green leaves, of carmine color to the reverse and strongly punctuating. It is called "banana plant" because the upper part of the roots is turgid, almost to form a banana helmet as a whole. The plant, if it is not placed in the aquarium as a submerged element but lives in part emerged, comes to bloom: the flowers are white and rather small.

Multiplication By division of the buds that are born on the petiole of the leaves. From the level of such sprouts a cespo of young roots develops.

Ambient Temperature: 10-25 °C, with optimum around 18-20 °C; pH: neutral; water hardness: medium; lighting: good, but not excessive; substrate: sandy.

Notes The banana plant is suitable for both tempered aquariums and warm aquariums.

CRESCITA: Aquatic plant with a characteristic rhizome in the form of “ banana cask”, containing nutrients of reserve, from which leaves are very similar to those of nymphs that tend to reach the surface.

POSITION: The protagonist plant, for its curious conformation should be placed in an isolated position so as to be clearly visible.

COLTIVATION: On the market there are rhizomes with some sprouts, only to be sanded with the tip of the “bananas”, leaving the rest uncovered. Usually the plant develops quite quickly numerous leaves, some of which reach the surface, within a few months the growth slows down or stops completely, regardless of the environmental conditions. She deserves to be cultivated for her strange form that earned her the common name of “banana plant”.
