In most regions of Italy, the tap water is not of excellent quality and very often too hard (total hardness (GH) about 20 or more and a pH to 8 is not rare) for maintaining some ornamental fish.

However, a GH around 7, a rather neutral pH and a very low level of nitrates (NO3) are ideal for sustainable maintenance of a large majority of fish.
