Rotala Species 'Yao Yai' is a water plant belonging to the Lythraceae family, originally from Southeast Asia. It is a thin and flexible stem plant, characterized by lanceolate leaves ranging from green to red, depending on the cultivation conditions. The upper leaves tend to take more intense shades of red or orange in the presence of good lighting and fertilization. This specimen is very appreciated in the aquarium for its bushy appearance and for the chromatic contrasts that can create. The size of the 'Yao Yai' rotate can reach 30-40 cm in height, while each stem expands into width between 3 and 6 cm. Its care requires a medium-high illumination, which ranges from 0.5 to 1 watt per liter; A greater intensity of light contributes to more compact growth and more brightly colored. The optimal temperatures for its growth is between 20 and 28 ° C, with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5 and a water hardness of 2-12 DGH.
Although the addition of CO2 is not strictly necessary, it is highly recommended to promote vigorous growth and a brighter color. The substrate should be rich in nutrients, with the possible integration of liquid fertilizers or fertilizer pads positioned near the roots.
The plant has a medium-high cultivation difficulty, since it requires stable conditions and an adequate amount of nutrients to maintain vigorous growth and intense colors.
It is particularly sensitive to iron deficiencies and microelements, which can slow down its growth or cause pallor in the leaves. In the aquarium, the Rotala Species 'Yao Yai' lends itself well to positioning in the medium-fund, where its bushy appearance can create a strong aesthetic impact.
It is often used in the aquascape to add a touch of vivid color. Its growth is rapid in optimal conditions, and the propagation takes place easily by cutting: it is sufficient to cut the upper part of the stems and repay them into the substrate. Frequent pruning favors more dense and more compact growth.
This plant, if not pruned regularly, can become dominant in the aquarium, requiring constant maintenance to maintain the desired form. Rotala Species 'Yao Yai' is an excellent choice for those who want to add strong color contrasts into a naturalistic layout or in a Dutch style aquascape.
